I picked up this shotgun a few months ago. The product picture shows the 590A1 Blackwater (sku 51772), which is the same as the 51771 offered here but with the Blackwater logo. The ability to mount a bayonet is exactly as cool as you think it is. Some have reported issues with the OKC-3S, but I use an M7 and it works fine. The bayonet lug has a threaded hole for the front sling stud, which is a better location than the magazine tube endcap it is normally threaded into. The gun needs to be cleaned and cycled by hand to smooth it out, or just clean it and shoot it. The finish will wear off the internals pretty quickly, but the exterior finish is pretty tough. For best rust prevention, wipe the inside and outside of the steel parts with CLP and it’ll be fine. The receiver is aluminum and won’t rust ever. Be careful removing the magazine spring retainer (inside the tube, past the screw-on endcap) because the magazine tube is flimsy and you could damage the end of it. The magazine tube is red-loctited in and you’ll have to send it to Mossberg to get it fixed. The factory furniture feels cheap, but it works. The forend has a rail ladder on the bottom rail that will have to come off to mount something to it. Adjusting the rear sight is not an exact science because it doesn’t have click detents. You just loosen some screws and hope for the best. My accuracy with slugs wasn’t too great, probably just because of inexperience. I got 8″ groups at 50 yards but shot out the bullseye at 25 yards. The recoil pad works fine for normal 2-3/4″ loads but would probably be overwhelmed by 3″ loads. The comb of the stock is too low for me to get a proper cheek weld using these ghost ring sights. However, it looks like I would get a perfect cheek weld with a standard bead sight. The ability to store ammo in the stock is kinda cool but people say these stocks don’t hold up to a lot of use. Also, the ammo storage tube on the right side of the stock will pulverize your face if you shoot it left-handed. The gun only has a cylinder bore, but the barrel is so thick that a gunsmith could thread it for chokes. This thick barrel really adds to the weight and makes this a front-heavy shotgun. If you can find this gun for ~$120 less than the Magpul version (sku 51773) then just buy this version and add the Magpul furniture later. You can then adjust the length of pull (too long on this version), adjust the cheek height (too short on this version), and even get a Remington 870 Limbsaver recoil pad and adapter for better felt recoil (barely enough on this version). The Magpul SGA furniture option will prevent you from using the 590A1 heat shield (sku 16335P) without some creative effort. Overall, this is a heavy-duty shotgun that is really only meant for certain *cough* military *cough* scenarios but is still nice to have and use.
